How it works

Why the hook decides

The feed shows a video to more people if viewers watch it to the end. Watching to the end starts with the first seconds.

Five styles

A question sparks curiosity, a number promises specifics, a provocation invites disagreement, a quote borrows authority, and a mistake plays on fear of doing the same. Two hooks for each.

Strength score

Every hook gets a 0–100 score for how likely it is to stop your audience’s scroll, plus one line on what it relies on.

No bait and switch

A hook promises what the video actually delivers. Clickbait with no substance lifts views for a second and tanks watch time, and platforms punish that.

What is a hook in a video?

A hook is the first line or shot of a video that tells the viewer, in 1–3 seconds, why they should keep watching. In short videos it is the main factor in retention: viewers decide whether to swipe away in the first seconds.

How long should a hook be?

One sentence you can say in 2–3 seconds, usually up to 12 words. Anything longer and viewers won’t wait for the end of it before swiping.

Do hooks work the same for Reels, TikTok, and Shorts?

Yes. The mechanics of all three feeds are the same: a video is shown to more people if viewers watch it through. Only the platform’s style differs, and a good hook works everywhere.

How many hooks can I generate for free?

5 requests per hour without signing up, 10 hooks per request. In Kutto after you log in there is no such limit, plus you can test your own hook and get hooks from a link to a finished video.
